Abstrakt

The article presents empirical research results on parental leave in Austria. The results show individual parental gains for dually reconciling work and family, and by decreasing gender inequalities in this area. However, at presence, men’s parental leave with a duration of six month or longer is still perceived as being exceptional. By contrast, mothers of infants, who are continuing their professional career after a maternity leave, especially in full-time employment, are rare, and this is seen to be unusual. Concluding, the empirical results show that the dual parental reconciliation of employment and childcare is still not implemented in a wider societal context. Likewise, this refers to the persistence of traditionally gendered stereotypes in the working sphere. Evidently, the Covid-19-virus-crisis reinforces gender inequalities in the labour market, concerning the reconciling of work and family, furthermore indicating the further promotion of an existing gender pay and childcare gap.
