Christina Siegert, Nadia Steiber, Laura Zilian: The Education-Specific Impact of First Birth on Poverty Risk Within Couples: Evidence from Austrian Register Data

This paper examines how poverty dynamics around first birth vary by educational background within different-sex couples in Austria. Using longitudinal administrative data and an event study design, we focus on the role of educational attainment and educational assortative mating on gendered poverty risks from two years before the transition to parenthood until the first child turns six. The results highlight the economic vulnerability of partnered mothers across education levels.

Manuel Valdéz, Nadia Steiber: Like parents, like child? The intergenerational transmission of educational assortative mating in Europe

Partners are often selected according to shared traits such as educational attainment, a behavior known as assortative mating. By sorting similar individuals into families and pooling resources relevant for children’s future life opportunities, educational assortative mating contributes to social closure and the intergenerational transmission of social advantage. Crucially, however, this contribution to social reproduction would be accentuated if mating behaviors were transmitted across generations, which has been surprisingly overlooked in previous research.

Stefan Vogtenhuber, Nadia Steiber: Bridging origin and destination: the impact of human capital and culture on refugee labor market success

This study examines the employment transitions of refugees and their success in the labor market, particularly in terms of job stability, unemployment rates, and earnings. Using an approach that integrates individual human capital formation and socio-cultural factors, we analyze the relationship between education and characteristics of the country of origin, such as the quality of education systems, prevailing cultural norms and values, including attitudes toward gender roles and women's labor force participation, and the demand for labor in the destination country.
