Valentina Cuzzocrea

Valentina Cuzzocrea is Senior Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari, Italy. In 2018, she obtained the Italian ‘Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale’ to work as Associate Professor in the field of ‘Sociology of Cultural and Communicative Processes’, and ‘General Sociology’. She holds an MA (2004) and a PhD (2008) in Sociology from the University of Essex (UK), and a Laurea (four-year degree, 2002) in Political Science, cum laude, from the University of Cagliari. She teaches ‘Theory and Methods of Social Research’ at the postgraduate level. She is currently Book Review Editor of the journal ‘Youth and Globalization’ (Brill), and in the editorial board of Brill series ‘Youth in a Globalizing World’.

She is interested in several areas of youth research, such as youth employment, participation, youth futures. Additionally, her work develops along issues of domestication of public space, time, (geographical) mobility, corporate social responsibility and youth policy. She is specialised in qualitative methodologies.  

Valentina is past coordinator of the ESA RN30 Youth & Generation (2015-2017), and (past) appointed members of the PEYR (Pool of European Youth Researchers) to support the CoE-EC Youth Partnership in the field of youth on matters of youth policy (oct 2014-dec 2016). She has worked as research consultant several times on youth related projects of the Council of Europe (amongst others Tranzit, Edgeryders, European Platform for Learning Mobility), and with Agenzia Nazionale Giovani/Eurodesk Italy.

Prior to her current position, she has worked at the Max-Weber-Kolleg für kultur- und sozialwissenschaftliche Studien, Erfurt, under the programme Marie Curie COFUND H2020 for experienced researchers. In Germany she also was Gastwissenschaftlerin at the Deutsches Jugendinstitut to cooperate in the H2020 MOVE project. She has also been (untenured) Assistant Professor at the University of Cagliari (2012-2016) on the project ‘Youth, Citizenship and the Capacity to Aspire’ (ifuture); Research Associate at the University of Kent (UK) on the 7FP ALICE RAP; Research Fellow at the University of Cagliari funded by the Region of Sardinia.

She has published in several youth and sociology journals, including ‘Current Sociology’, ‘British Journal of Sociology’, ‘Time & Society’, ‘Sociological research Online’, ‘Young’, ‘Journal of Youth Studies’ and several others also at the national level such as ‘Rassegna Italiana di Sociologia’ and ‘Sociologia del Lavoro’. Her last books are: (Cairns, Krzaklewska, Cuzzocrea, Allaste) ‘Mobility, Education and Employability in the European Union. Inside Erasmus’, Palgrave Macmillan, 2018; (Cairns, Cuzzocrea, Briggs, Veloso), ‘The Consequences of Mobility: Skilled Migration, Scientific Development and the Reproduction of Inequality’, Palgrave Macmillan, 2017.

Valentina Cuzzocrea is a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of Sociology between September and December 2018 and is working on the research project “Youth in Context”. She is collaborating with Yuri Kazepov and his team on youth research topics and she is participating in the Department project “Pathways to the Future - a longitudinal study of the social integration of young people in Vienna”.
