Family / Generations / Life Course / Health

The Family / Generations / Life Course research area focuses on demographic challenges, socio-demographic developments, and the impact social processes have on life courses, families and family life. We are currently also investigating the dynamics and change in courses of (family) life, the construction of various forms of families and life phases, relationships between family members and generations, and relationships between families and other areas of society. Health and health promotion issues are studied in connection with the development of longevity.

As to methodology, one research focus is placed on qualitative methods and innovative (non-)verbal research designs. The methods employed also include longitudinal designs, evaluation techniques for effects of measures and biographical research techniques. Finally, we are keen to explore basic theoretical issues (e.g. the development of generational relationships over the course of life, stereotyping and prejudice research) and to address a variety of sociopolitical challenges (e.g. unemployment among elderly employees, single-parent poverty, maternity and paternity leave regulations, forms of housing over the life course).
